Anna Quindlen is famous for her clear poignancy, her ability to draw from a common consciousness and transform what seem to be incoherent jumbled thoughts into magic aha! moments. Here are a few from her talk this morning on the unique role of women in society today.
“Women leaders are a new breed, we are the Inside Outsiders.” (We love this one because it reminds us of our tagline “Spirit & Style, Inside and Out.")
“Women’s leadership is about REDEFINITION and men’s leadership is about maintaining the status quo.” Isn’t that true? It’s what we all do everyday without even knowing it. We redefine what a woman’s role is - whether it’s as a mom or a co-worker or a boss or a friend or a wife we are re-writing the rules and redefining social expectations. Keep it up.
“Rise up and reach down.” She said this when she was talking about progress, and that women advance by standing on the shoulders of the women before them. As you rise up always remember to reach down and give a hand to someone who is making the climb behind you.
“It is possible to do good while doing good for yourself.” Just look at Oprah!
There are thousands of incredible people stopping by our Misstropolis booth today. Here are some comments from some of them:
Lisa Rodrigues from Teen Voices:
Teen Voices is a youth magazine that caters to teen girls from the Boston area, ages 14-19. Today has been an amazing time so far! We brought our teen Peer Leaders to the workshop that was being lead by Victoria Rowells, actress (Young and the Restless), philanthropist, dancer, and so much more!! It was an incredible experience and we appreciated everything that Victoria had to offer. Feel free to check out more about Teen Voices by going to our website http://www.teenvoices.com! Thanks for the experience! Go Misstropolis!!!
Julia Gina Katie & Jill from Hingham High, here for the Young Women’s Program: It was inspiring to hear Anna Quindlen speak at the opening keynote addresses. She represents the empowerment of women in this modern age, the type of empowerment that raises everybody else, as opposed to the type that brings certain groups down.
“I attended the changing face of women’s health research. The speakers were amazing and the information provided was very useful. I am so glad I made the decision to attend today’s conference.”
Beth from Big Sister of Boston: Ever thought about being a Big Sister? Remember the special aunt, mentor, sister, friend that always seemed to make time for you when you were a little girl? Imagine being able to be that person for a young girl in the Greater Boston area. Many women attending the MA Conference for Womare realizing the same thing and are signing up today! Visit us at http://www.bigsister.org to learn about ways that you can impact a girl by becoming her Big Sister.
Hi from a spectacular place, wonderful women and the best blog in New England for women. The Massachusetts Conference for Women has drawn over 5,000 energetic, empowered and determined women. With speakers ranging from Jack and Suzie Welch to Marian Heard to Anna Quindlen everyone learned and shared their experiences through the modern business world. Misstropolis has sat precisely positioned in the middle. I’m Sherrie Noble, among other things a writer and a consultant and the Misstropolis women have been everywhere, asking questions, bringing the cutting edge of tech biz to every meeting, every speaker. Lucky are we to have them here, sorry are all of us if you could not attend. Make a point to put next year’s date, December 11, 2008 on your calendar. No dinosaurs here but the best of the best? WOWie Wow Wow! This has been one unbelievable day. I had an absolute blast moderating the discussion on The Effects of Stress on your Life and Health. Meeting Dr. Kathleen Hall was one of the highpoints of the day. She is the CEO of the Stress Institute and a media expert on mindfulness and how to reduce the stress in your life. The other speaker on our panel was the head of behavioral psychology at Canyon Ranch - what a job huh? But as he said just because he works there doesn’t mean he’s on the table getting massages all day. These two had so many suggestions about how to CALM DOWN and enjoy life. This is getting long so here’s a quick snapshot from Kathleen - SELF Care: S = serenity E= exercise L=love and F=food. Take care of yourself with all these things in mind, connect back to yourself and you’ll happier and healthier for it. - Robin

A huge thank you to Misstropolis for sending me to the 2007 Mass Conference for Women!! I was the winner of two tickets based on my essay about my son’s illness and my switch from career woman to caregiver.
The turning over of a new year always makes me take stock of my life as a woman, mother and wife. This conference was a great way to take a step back from it all, gain perspective and get a little inspiration on managing change and stress. It was also a great opportunity for me to set some personal goals and to hear from some highly accomplished women like Suzy Welch and others on balancing it all, branding and public speaking to just name a few.
This conference was not just about getting ahead in your career but equally about living a fulfilled life as a woman, mother and mate in our incredibly frenetic society. When it comes down to it, these are the topics that truly matter and in my opinion are worth investing time upon. Thanks again Misstropolis and Happy 2008!!
