MAXipolitan: New Year, New Vices

Email to a friendPrint this article

Number one: eat less, number two: exercise more, number three… oh hell: indulge in everything. “My experience has taught me that a man who has no vices has damned few virtues.” Old Abe really was honest - a quote after my own heart.

Even though the event circuit slows down for the holidays, there are plenty of ways to indulge your inner socialite this holiday season.

THE 411
Whether you want to light your nose up redder than Rudolph’s or spa for the day, here are a couple fabulous ways to celebrate yourself this coming week…

Pamper yourself
After you shop your little fingers to the nubs and pound the pavement scouring the city for the perfect holiday present, go get beautified at The Spa @ Equinox.

WHERE WAS I?

Before everything turned freezing and Christmas 24/7, there were some fabulous events that heated up November. WHERE WERE YOU???

The SVEDKA Vodka of the Future Competition on November 26th pitted some of Boston’s best bartenders against each other to see who could concoct the most futuristic cocktail. Emcee Jenny Johnson of NECN’s TV Diner and Kelly Malone of Mix 98.5 were among the judges. From ten bartenders down to four semifinalists, the ultimate winners were Kelly Shea of Azure for her “Beta Carrotini” in first place, Jennifer Murphy from Stella with her “Moon Beam” in second and Liz Oliver of Mantra winning third for the “Terminator”.

On Nov. 20th, STIX opened to much fanfare. And Sunday, December 9 Ken Oringer’s warm and cozy Toro celebrated its two year anniversary.

Victoria Secret hosted a bash at The Estate on December 4th co-sponsored by The Improper Bostonian. Those really homely girls of the V.S. runway strutted their stuff in front of 500 rapt revelers. Note: the invite I was received was filled with my favorite - gold glitter - that may still be coating my entire office as I write this. The invite alone sold me. Ed Kane’s Estate was packed with VIP’s: Red Sox owner John Henry, Boston Common publisher Glenn Kelley, Revolution captain Taylor Twellman, and Brazilian Goddess, Izabel Goulart.

Bill Clinton graced the already crowded Liberty Hotel with his presence on December 3 for a big ticket fundraiser for Hillary. Bryan Rafanelli, Barbara Lee, Barbara and Steve Grossman, Ellyn McColgan and Mayor Menino were among the guests. The former pres. mentioned that Gorby was staying the hotel and that they had hung out a bit, but failed to mention his dinner date with Ethan Hawke, Mark Ruffalo and Amada Peet, all in town shooting Real Men Cry. We got the inside scoop on that news when Misstrop’s Editor in Chief left the party and gave them a ride home.

I CAN’T FIND MY DRINK

Some of the best cocktails this season appeal not only to your “make it a double” seasonal mood disorder, but to your sensibly healthy side:

At 33 Restaurant & Lounge, they’re sporting the Chamomile-teani with Chamomile Tea, Bombay Sapphire Gin, Barenjager Honey Liquor and fresh lemon and the Crimson Summer: Luxurious 10 Cane Rum mixed with Chambord, Honey, Muddle berries and Crimson Berry Tea.

At Vox Populi, they’ve got an Indian chai special with a seasonal pumpkin spice – the Pumpkin Chai Latte Martini. And at Sibling Rivalry they’ve unveiled their ginger inspired drink the 525: Fresh Ginger and Pomegranate Juice with Mumm Napa “Brut Prestige” Sparkling Wine.

Cheers,
Max

Max,

I LOVE your new nightlife and social column in Misstropolis. This is just what Misstropolis needed...an infusion of “what’s happening” on the social and restaurant front in downtown Boston. The New Year’s party at the Vox sounds fabulous. I’ll spread the word to my friends who will be in town for the holidays. Happy Holidays to all!
