Daniela Corte’s Couture Maternity Gown

Some of you have been through it already, some are content to leave it to sisters and friends - and although the results more than make up for it, we all know that getting there ain’t pretty. I am referring of course to labor.

Now there are a lot of things that you have no control over, like how the water weight makes your fingers and toes look like breakfast sausages, or how your face twists in pain with the relentless contractions, but there is something besides getting a bikini wax and a mani/pedi to make you feel a bit more like yourself and a little less like a vessel.

Boston women’s clothing designer Daniela Corte has brought us the Dar-a-luz (“to give birth” in Spanish) birthing dress. An empire-waisted jersey dress with twisted straps and a flattering fit that looks from the front like a cute summer sundress, but is in fact a hospital-friendly frock even the gruffest maternity nurses will love. The back of the dress closes securely with four ties so that you’re new b.f.f., the anesthesiologist, can work her magic.

You know how the saying goes, “Necessity is the mother of invention,” well this holds true for Daniela. During her first pregnancy Daniela was packing her overnight bag and could not find anything that was pretty and comfortable enough for this most special of occasions, so she grabbed some jersey from her studio and started cutting What she was left with was the Dar–a–luz. The dress, made from organic cotton, comes in two sizes S/M and M/L and two colors, violet and steel blue. “As soon as I put it on,” she remembers, “I felt serene. I didn’t want to take it off.”

So now when the family comes to take a peek at the newest member of the clan, mom can look good too, and those first” just out of the oven” photos will be much nicer to display. Leave the hospital gowns for the sick, new moms need cover-ups worthy of celebration.

It might be too late for you, that shop may already be closed, but think about your friends and sisters. Forget the diaper cake - the Dar-a-luz will be the biggest hit at any baby shower. After the day has passed it can still be thrown on over jeans or leggings and worn around the house where no doubt there will be more visitors with cameras.
