Gifts for Moms, Worthy of the Day

She bandaged your boo boos, helped you with your homework, remembered the names of your friends and enemies, took pictures to document every stage of your life, and most importantly believed in you when you didn’t believe in yourself. She’s… Mom.
Mother’s Day is still a little ways off, but if you want a gift that’s really going to make mom’s day, or if you want to start dropping hints about something you might like for yourself, now’s the time. Don’t risk opening a Vera Bradley bag when you really want Balenciaga.
Here are Misstropolis’ Mother’s Day suggestions. Because for all they give, all the time, Moms deserve the very best gifts in return.
Tory Nicole’s custom photo handbags are so popular that almost everyone who receives one calls to order more. Owner Michelle Marshall has been told that the large silk wristlets are “the mother-in-law gift of the year.”
Who wouldn’t covet a silky wristlet, canvas tote, or bamboo handled purse with their kids, dog or summer house on it?! Just email a photo and in a couple weeks you’ll have the gift that will finally make her forgive you for the totaled station wagon in ’87.
*Order by April 18 and mention Misstropolis, and get a free black silk lined wristlet. *
Jeanine Payer makes delicate, thoughtful necklaces engraved with quotes or poems. Any of her pieces would make a lovely gift, but if you prefer to customize, she is offering a special Mother’s Day promotion: free black and white custom photos with your choice of selected poems and hand-painted gold wings. Orders must be in by April 26.
A picture speaks a thousand words, right? So tell mom how much you love her by participating in the Mothers Day Portrait Extravaganza at the Photographic Resource Center at Boston University. I got this as a gift for my mother a few years ago, and we had pictures taken of us with my sister and daughters. The portrait hangs in all of our homes and reminds us how important our mothers, grandmothers and sisters are.
If I had to choose my favorite Mothers Day it would be my first. On that very special day my husband gave me a vintage locket from Small Pleasures on Newbury St. and a rose bush to plant in our “new” yard since we had just moved. Either or both of these would make a lovely gift for mom. Try Winston for the flowers or plantings, and Small Pleasures for a beautiful antique locket.

Mother, daughter, godmother… It’s still hard to believe I am all of those things. And as much as I want to pretend commercialized gestures like mother’s day don’t matter to me, they do. It means a lot to be recognized for all the crap taken over the course of the year! So, take care of your mama! Take care of your grandma, your aunt and your godmommy. A little goes a long way.
