Makes You Feel Like Nesting
Email to a friendPrint this article
Right down the road from the courthouses, tucked next to a crowded little antique store in Dedham square, is a cozy slice of heaven called Nest. Yes, I am partial to the name, but you don’t have to be named for a bird to realize this shop is a rare one. Count on losing yourself for an hour or so, whenever you wander into Nest.
It’s not just the homey arrangement of antiques, accessories and art; the iron bed draped in trillion count Matouk linens; the cool kids’ gifts or the carefully sourced skin products and candles. It’s also the warm and mellow staff that makes you feel like you’ve entered the living room of your favorite neighbor. That and the hilarious hairdo paintings by Ted Rabidoux.
Nest was opened by six partners who wanted to offer chic, unique things in a relaxed, come-and-hang-out environment. Each partner oversees a specific product area: one’s on jewelry, one’s on antiques, one’s garden, etc. But all six share a passion for fine art and a commitment to promoting local artists. To this end, they rotate the work of an Artist of the Month, and so far every artist has asked to come again.
Look for Louis XV style chairs upholstered in animal print, Angela Adams rugs, offbeat garden ornaments, Portia Clarke pearls, soy body whip (you know, the kind they wanted to give out at Cannes) and hand made cards that’ll inspire you to write those overdue thank you’s, all displayed beneath the work of April’s artist, landscape painter Pia Peterson.
Nest is the only store in the area to carry the exotic hand-blocked pareos, over-sized sunhats, beach bags, and kurtas (tunics to you and me) from Roberta Freymann. And wait till you see her pajamas for kids.
Thursday, April 12th from noon until 8 pm Nest is having a spring trunk show featuring jeweler Maryam Sardari, and textile artist Camilla MacFadyen. It’s a good excuse to head to Dedham and pay the shop a visit. Besides, it’s spring. Time to feather the nest.
