GOOD Entertaining Tips for the Holidays
Email to a friendPrint this article
It’s easy to get overwhelmed when organizing the perfect holiday get-together. Here are some easy-to-follow tips from GOOD that will help bring out your inner host or hostess.
1. All GOOD entertainers know that lighting is key. Set the mood with candlelight. Crystal votives in differing shapes and sizes will provide some sparkle for the table. It’s also nice to scatter them in clusters throughout the room.

2. Cooking not your thing? No problem. Preparation is key. A “MEZZE PLATE” is a great way to serve a crowd. You can do three platters: one for meats, one for cheese and crusty bread and one for antipasti and dips.
- Buy everything ahead of time. We like venturing out to the NORTH END for a day of shopping.
- Keep flavors separate by using small bowls to hold food such as olives or artichokes.
- Keep it simple and use WHITE platters and bowls to show off the colors and textures of foods. We like a mix of antique and new bowls in different shapes and sizes.
- To make meats easier to pick up and eat, place waxed butcher paper between slices of prosciutto de parma, pancetta or salami.
- Artisan cheeses are best presented whole or in a large wedge so that everyone can help themselves.
- Don’t forget to have plenty of cheese knives and serving utensils on hand!

3. Have fun with table settings.
- Instead of one large centerpiece, mix a selection of antique and modern glassware for a festive tabletop arrangement.
- Too many flower colors look busy. We like the simplicity of green and white flowers together.
- Belgian artist canvas makes great table linens. Available at art supply stores by the yard - just cut to your needed length and fray edges for a chic look!

4. Since everything is prepared and beautifully presented you can sit back and enjoy the evening with your guests. A relaxed host allows guests to relax. And remember - keep the libations flowing!

Wow—this article made me feel pretty good about my hosting abilities (minus the cooking!) Being just post-wedding, we have beautiful, artsy serving dishes and funky crystal votives. I love the wooden platter in the 1st shot. Thanks Paul and Nikki. Marty
After entertaining for nearly 40 years of mym arrried life, I love to learn new ideas for party success. I enjoy theme parties, like an election party. Now I can incorporate better attention to lighting and table decoration. Keep the helpful suggestions coming please!
