12 Days Holiday Gift Guide: Cuchi Cuchi

I admit I was hesitant at first. Any establishment named after a Charo catch-phrase was bound to induce a bout of skepticism. True, I loved watching Charo add a splash of Latin flavor to the Love Boat but her hip shaking and fountain of hair didn’t necessarily translate into culinary accomplishments. Fortunately, once I entered Cuchi Cuchi I was won over by the eclectic décor; and there was no hesitation when I shimmied Charo-like up to the bar for one of the restaurant’s signature cocktails.
Decorated like the grand parlor - slash - boudoir of a well-traveled former burlesque star (in fact, modern day burlesque sensation Dita Von Teese is represented by several signed photographs), Cuchi Cuchi’s dining area and bar are chock-a-block with decorative details like stained glass, intricate moldings, glass columns as well as vintage chairs, sofas and lamps all presided over by paintings of Salome and a portrait of Carmen Miranda.
While it’s easy to get distracted by the surroundings at Cuchi Cuchi, don’t forget to explore the extensive list of cocktails and small-tasting plates with flavors inspired by hot spots all over the globe including Russia, Argentina, Morocco and France. Beneath the eccentric exterior of Cuchi Cuchi lies an accomplished restaurant and bar offering memorable flavors and taste-sensations so don’t be fooled by all the feathers and fluff.
1. Louboutin “Bridget” Peeptoe Bootie ($1795) I don’t know how he does it but Christian Louboutin is one of those designers who manages to combine the most disparate patterns and materials into very covetable footwear. Available at Barneys.

2. Soap and Paper Factory Geranium Candle ($28) Every product by Soap and Paper factory is so beautifully packaged that these candles win you over way before they’re lit (sound familiar?)  The Geranium is flowery with just the right hint of spice.  Available on the Soap and Paper factory site.

3. Dupatta Tikka Scarf ($202) The subtle pattern of this scarf contrasts nicely with the playful pom pom trim. It’s a nice year-round piece and a nice gift for either the edgy or the conservative on your list. Available on the unstoppably beautiful Matta site.
