12 Days Holiday Gift Guide: Franklin Cafe

Email to a friendPrint this article

I fell for the neighborly charms of Franklin Café long before I moved to Boston.  Back during my Manhattan days, I visited Boston frequently and never left without hunkering down for at least one late night dinner at Franklin, where everyone feels like a welcome local in the cozy dining room/bar.

True, the ever-changing menu of modern American cuisine is consistently delicious; yes, the wine, beer and cocktail offerings are plentiful and sure, the space itself makes one feel like they’ve discovered the best treasure in their own backyard but my most favorite thing about Franklin Café is that they serve dinner into the wee hours of the morning.  To the great relief of my inner night owl, no one bats an eye when you stumble into the Franklin at 12:30 am and ask for a table.  If anything, the host will tell you there is a bit of a wait.

1.The Sun is Too Shiny Wall Art ($300) Seeing as I’ve spent many a late night/early morning enjoying the seasonal offerings at Franklin Cafe I thought the phrase on this one-of-a-kind ceramic piece was all too appropriate especially since the ‘morning after’ often turns into more of an ‘after afternoon’.  This is a unique piece by one of my favorite New York ceramic studios for vases and lamps - KleinReid.

2. Winestein Mug ($20) Franklin has an impressive selection of wines and beers (many local micro brews) so this is the perfect drinking glass for someone who likes to mix and match beverages.

6. Pure-Chocolate chocolatier - anything.  Given that Franklin Cafe has such an indelible neighborhood vibe, I like that this chocolatier hails from none other than nearby Quincy Massachusetts and since the South End location doesn’t serve dessert, one can stock up on these treats and BYOD.
