Shepherding a show from the first germ of an idea through the opening party to the end of the run means starts and stops, momentum and lulls, excitement and fear, and moments of genuine awe. Curating is collaboration—with artists, gallerists, installers, shippers, printers, photographers, videographers, and ultimately with the audiences who come out to see the work. My goal is always to share ideas and energy, to bring people together around a currency more valuable than money: creativity.

FLOAT at FPAC Art Space developed around this idea of beauty, despite: the revolutionary energy artists dedicate to making beautiful work, even when the world feels anything but beautiful. Five participating artists— Adria Arch, Cicely Carew, Carly Glovinski, Jo Lobdell, and Eva Lundsager—together create an invitation to enter a space of healing and radical joy. Nothing feels more badass than Cicely Carew transforming harsh, thematically loaded materials like wire mesh and garden fencing into ephemeral floating sculpture. Could she have made something that addressed inhumane immigration and health policy in literal terms? Of course, but by making something beautiful, she affirms her own humanity, modeling resiliency, innovation, and transcendence. Ditto Adria Arch’s audacious, impossible-to-ignore 3D paintings, ditto Eva Lundsager’s chaotic, hypnotic, interior landscapes, ditto Carly Glovinski’s captured sunsets in recycled jars, and ditto Jo Lobdell’s patient, painstaking weaving of hand-dyed fibers into abstracted daisies that take up space in the air and on the ground.

For these artists, magic is a verb. Through their practices, they transcend the despair and brutality perpetuated via news channels, social media, politics, policy, economic discrimination, medical neglect, and ecological sabotage, and—if we are willing to pay attention—lift us up with them.
FLOAT is on view for six more days, through Saturday August 22. I hope you get a chance to see it. I hope it lifts you up.
